The commission administers the Senior AIDES Program in each of the seven counties in Region 2. The program provides federally subsidized, part-time employment for low income persons 55 and older.
The program provides a productive means by which elderly persons may supplement their pensions through part-time work and expands community services in non-profit agencies where funds are not available to hire the additional staff needed.
Senior aides in West Alabama work in a variety of positions such as homemaker aides for the Department of Human Resources, librarian aides in schools and public libraries, training aides with the Arc of Tuscaloosa, recreation aides for county parks and recreation authorities, day care center aides and numerous other jobs.
In addition to employment, the program provides job training, educational, social and supportive services for participants. An important goal of the Senior AIDES Program is for workers to move from subsidized job placement to unsubsidized job placement with their agency or obtain work in the private sector. The program is federally funded by the Title V Senior Community Service Employment Program under the Senior Service America, Inc. and the Alabama Department of Senior Services.
